Algolagnia
Algolagnia (Greek algos pain and lagneia pleasure) is a clinical term created at the end of the 19th century and describes the pleasure of inflicting and receiving pain stimuli. The term was largely replaced by the synonym sadomasochism, with passive algolagnia being replaced by masochism and active algolagnia by sadism. The passive aspect can also be referred to as algophilia (Greek philia love), pleasure pain or pain lust, a less commonly used term for masochism. There is also algomania (Greek mania madness), which describes the pathological desire for pain.
In the context of sexual medical diagnostics or psychoanalysis, algolagnia is considered to be in need of treatment, analogous to sadomasochism, if sexual satisfaction is difficult or seems impossible without appropriate practices and the affected person experiences a corresponding level of suffering. Algomania is classified in the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD) under the code number F65.5 as a disorder of sexual preference in the group of personality and behavioural disorders.
