Electra complex
The Electra complex is a psychoanalytic term coined by Sigmund Freud. It describes a model in which a girl, in an early developmental phase, experiences the father as especially attractive and the mother as a rival. Today, the term is considered historically important but scientifically controversial; it is used more in connection with the history of psychoanalysis than as a reliable explanatory model.
In modern usage, the term should be applied cautiously, as it is highly simplified and does not adequately capture all family or psychosexual development. In many professional contexts, more differentiated terms and developmental models are preferred.
