Proculromantic

Ad

Proculromantic refers to a romantic orientation or self-description for people who experience romantic attraction mainly or exclusively toward individuals with whom a romantic relationship is perceived as unreachable, impossible, or ruled out. This may include people who are very far away, unavailable, fictional, famous, or otherwise inaccessible. The term is often associated with the aromantic spectrum, because romantic attraction may be present but occurs only under specific conditions.

Being proculromantic does not automatically mean that a person cannot have relationships or is generally afraid of closeness. What matters is the pattern of romantic attraction, not an outside judgment of someone’s relationship life. Some proculromantic people experience attraction precisely because a real relationship is not possible; for others, the experience may be more complex or change over time.

Like many terms related to romantic orientation, proculromantic is a self-description and not a medical or psychological diagnosis. It should be used only when a person finds it appropriate for themselves. Respectful use means taking the self-definition seriously, not hastily interpreting it as fear of commitment or “avoidance,” and asking open questions if the person wants to talk about it.
