Estrogen
Estrogens are a group of sex hormones involved in the development and regulation of the reproductive system and other bodily traits in many people. They are often called “female sex hormones” in everyday language because they are present at higher concentrations in many cis women than in many cis men. Estrogens are also present in cis men, although the hormonal balance varies depending on the body and life stage.
In hormone therapy, estrogens can cause physical changes in trans women, such as a different fat distribution, breast development, softer skin, or reduced testicular function. Changes in body hair and scalp hair may also occur, though the extent and speed vary greatly from person to person. Hormone therapy should only be carried out under medical supervision, as effects, side effects, and risks need to be monitored professionally.
