Hymen

The hymen is a thin, flexible fold of mucous tissue at the vaginal opening. It does not fully cover the vaginal entrance and varies greatly from person to person from birth. In some people it is very elastic, while in others it is more sensitive; it can also change over time due to growth, sports, tampon use, or other everyday activities.

Contrary to a common myth, the hymen is not a reliable indicator of sexual activity or “virginity.” It may stretch or tear during first penetration, but it does not have to, and it can also be injured without sexual intercourse. If there is pain, bleeding, or uncertainty, a gynecological examination is advisable.
