Binary
The term binary is used when only two genders are taken as the basis for discussion, usually woman and man. A binary classification therefore assumes two clearly separated genders and does not fully include other gender identities.
In the context of gender, the term is often important for distinguishing between binary and non-binary understandings. At the same time, it should be noted that gender diversity is real and may be recorded or understood differently depending on definition, research method and population. Figures and classifications can therefore vary considerably.
