Neurodivergent

Neurodivergent is a self-descriptive and descriptive term for people whose perception, information processing, thinking, learning, attention, or communication differ from neurological norms that are socially considered typical. Neurodivergence is an umbrella term, not a single medical condition.

The term comes from the concept of neurodiversity and is also used to describe neurological differences without framing them solely as deficits or disorders. Neurodivergence may include, for example, autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyscalculia, learning and perception differences, sensory processing differences, and, depending on the understanding of the term, trauma-related effects or combinations of different experiences. Medical diagnoses can be important for support and care, but they do not have to define a person’s entire identity or lived reality.

The counterpart to neurodivergent is neurotypical. Neurodiversity refers to the full spectrum of neurological variation, including both neurodivergent and neurotypical people. In sexual, romantic, or BDSM contexts, neurodivergence may influence how stimuli, touch, communication, routines, boundaries, or consent are experienced and expressed. Clear agreements, enough time, respectful checking in, and attention to individual needs are therefore especially important.
