Closet
To be “in the closet” means that a person keeps their sexual orientation and/or gender identity secret from others. They may do so out of fear of rejection, discrimination, or for personal reasons. The phrase comes from English; the opposite is “coming out,” meaning to disclose one’s identity.
The term should be used carefully, as it is strongly shaped by social norms and individual circumstances. Not everyone can or wants to disclose, and coming out should always be self-determined. Respect, confidentiality, and safety are essential.
