Outing
To out someone means to reveal a person's gender identity and/or sexual orientation to another person, a group, or the public, usually without that person's consent. Outing is therefore typically an involuntary and intrusive act. It must be distinguished from coming out, which is when a person voluntarily and self-determinedly discloses their identity or orientation.
Outing can have serious psychological, social, and professional consequences for the person affected. It violates privacy and autonomy and may lead to discrimination, exclusion, or even danger. Responsible handling of sensitive personal information is therefore essential.
