Cryptoqueer

Cryptoqueer comes from the ancient Greek “kryptós”, meaning “hidden”. People may describe themselves as cryptoqueer if they are queer but, for personal, social or safety-related reasons, live this only in a hidden way or disclose it only to selected people. To the outside world they may appear, or present themselves, as heterosexual, allosexual, alloromantic, cisgender or endosex, without this fully describing their actual identity or orientation.

Reasons for living as cryptoqueer may include queer-hostile families, partnerships, workplaces, religious communities, state repression, financial dependence, risk of violence or lack of support. Being cryptoqueer does not mean being “dishonest” or “less queer”. For many people it is a protective strategy that helps them balance self-determination, safety and belonging under difficult conditions.

In dating, sexuality and BDSM, cryptoqueerness can create particular needs around confidentiality, protection from outing and clear agreements. No one should be outed against their will or pressured to come out. At the same time, everyone involved must be able to speak honestly about consent, risks, relationship status, boundaries and protective measures so that encounters remain respectful and safe.
