Transphobia
Transphobia refers to rejection, discrimination, or hostility toward trans people. It can appear as open attacks, but also as prejudice, exclusion, degradation, denial of rights, or psychological and physical violence. This may affect trans people directly as well as people who are incorrectly assumed to be trans or whose gender expression does not fit conventional norms.
Internalized transphobia is the adoption of transphobic attitudes against one’s own self. It can lead to shame, fear, self-rejection, or hiding one’s identity, especially in a transphobic environment or before coming out. Respectful treatment means honoring a person’s self-identification and affording trans people the same dignity and safety as everyone else.
