Transvestism
Transvestism refers to wearing clothing or adopting a style culturally associated with the other gender, regardless of sexual orientation. The term is historically rooted and is now used only in limited contexts because it is often considered outdated or misleading. It is important to distinguish between clothing, gender expression, and gender identity.
The term dates back to early sexological and medical classifications, especially those associated with Magnus Hirschfeld, who used it to describe various forms of gender-nonconforming expression. From a contemporary perspective, however, such categories should not be generalized: wearing certain clothing says nothing reliable about identity or orientation. Historical terms such as “transvestite certificate” belong in their historical context and are no longer up to date.
