Deadname

A deadname is a former name, usually the name given at birth, that a person no longer uses and does not want to be called by. It most often affects trans and non-binary people, but other people may also have left behind a former name. Using a deadname can be hurtful and should therefore be avoided.

In BDSM and sexuality contexts, respectful use of names and forms of address is especially important. A person’s chosen name and pronouns should be respected, including outside of scene play or roleplay. Deadnaming is not a neutral mistake when the correct name is known; it is a serious disregard for identity and boundaries.
