Dysphoria

Dysphoria refers to a feeling of physical or social discomfort that can also be related to gender identity. Trans and non-binary people in particular may experience gender dysphoria when their inner sense of gender does not match how their body is perceived or how others classify them. Social misgendering, such as being addressed with the wrong terms or being seen as belonging to the wrong gender, can also be distressing.

It is important to distinguish personal distress from the social pressure that may intensify or contribute to it. Not all trans or non-binary people experience dysphoria, and not every form of discomfort leads to medical intervention. If hormone therapy or surgery is considered, it should only be undertaken after thorough specialist counseling and with medical supervision.
