Transtrender

Transtrender is a derogatory and discriminatory term used to suggest that certain trans people are only trans because it is supposedly a trend, or because they want attention, recognition, or sympathy. The term is often used in transphobic or transmedicalist contexts and usually serves to question other people’s self-identification.

It is especially often directed at trans people who experience little or no gender dysphoria, do not want or cannot access medical transition, do not conform to expected gender stereotypes, or are non-binary. Such accusations are harmful because they judge trans identities from the outside and pressure people to “prove” their identity through suffering, medical interventions, or particular forms of gender expression.

In factual terms, there are many different trans experiences, life paths, and forms of gender expression. Whether someone is trans does not depend on meeting certain expectations or pursuing medical transition. Because of its derogatory effect, transtrender should not be used as a neutral term.
