Gender Stereotypes
Gender stereotypes are socially learned and widely shared ideas about which traits, behaviours, abilities, interests or physical characteristics are attributed to a particular gender. They are closely linked to gender roles and influence how people see themselves, how they are treated and what expectations are placed on them.
Such stereotypes can be limiting because they ignore individual diversity. People who do not conform to expected ideas of “masculine”, “feminine” or other gendered assumptions often face devaluation, exclusion or discrimination. This particularly affects trans, non-binary and gender-nonconforming people, but also cis people whose appearance or behaviour does not fit common expectations.
In sexuality, dating and BDSM, gender stereotypes can shape assumptions about dominance, submission, desire or “typical” behaviour. Responsible encounters require roles, preferences and boundaries to be negotiated individually rather than inferred from a person’s gender. Respectful interaction acknowledges gender identity, gender expression and each person’s own self-description.
