Handcuffs
Handcuffs, also called wrist restraints or simply cuffs, are used to restrain hands or, in a modified form, feet. They usually consist of two metal rings connected by a locking mechanism that can be securely closed. In BDSM contexts, handcuffs are used as a bondage tool, while in everyday life they are mainly associated with law enforcement or security settings.
Special caution is needed when using handcuffs. Cheap or unsuitable models can break, open unintentionally, or cause injury. If fastened too tightly, they may lead to pressure marks, nerve irritation, or circulation problems; therefore, they should never be worn for too long and must be quickly releasable. For BDSM play, suitable restraints, supervision, clear agreements, and a safeword are important. Historical details about the development of handcuffs vary by source; modern designs are based on technical developments from the 19th and 20th centuries.
