Pathologization

Ad

Pathologization means classifying deviations from social norms as pathological or illness-related. This can concern sexuality, gender identity, relationship forms, behavior, appearance, emotions, or bodies. Experiences or ways of living that are primarily different or outside the majority norm are thereby shifted into a medical or psychological framework of interpretation.

Pathologization can be stigmatizing when people are portrayed as disordered, dangerous, or in need of treatment solely because of their identity, preferences, or way of life. In sexual and BDSM contexts, it is therefore important to distinguish carefully: consensual, voluntary practices or non-normative sexual interests are not automatically pathological. Behavior becomes problematic above all when it is non-consensual, harms others, violates legal boundaries, or causes significant distress to the person concerned.

Criticism of pathologization does not mean rejecting medical or therapeutic help in general. Diagnoses and professional support can be important when people are suffering, need safety, or want access to care. What matters is a respectful approach that takes self-determination seriously and does not treat every deviation from social expectations as an illness.
