Sex-Assignment Procedures

Sex-assignment procedures are medical interventions and treatments intended to align a person’s body with a male or female sex classification. Depending on the case, these may include surgeries and hormone treatments. The term is often used in connection with intersex children, for whom such measures have historically been, and in some cases still are, carried out without adequate consent.

The word “assignment” highlights that these measures are not about free gender self-determination, but about an externally imposed classification. Such interventions are medically, ethically, and legally highly sensitive. If they are not strictly necessary, they should be deferred until the affected person can make an informed decision, because irreversible procedures can have significant physical and psychological consequences.
