Safer sex refers to practices and measures that reduce the risk of sexually transmitted infections and unintended pregnancy during sex. The word “safer” is used deliberately because no method makes sex completely risk-free in every situation. Safer sex can include condoms, internal condoms, dental dams, gloves, lubricant, appropriate contraception, regular STI testing, vaccination against hepatitis A, hepatitis B, and HPV, and, depending on the situation, HIV PrEP, PEP, and effective HIV treatment.

Which measures are useful depends on the type of contact: vaginal, anal, and oral sex, shared sex toys, blood contact, menstrual blood, semen, vaginal fluids, anal fluids, and mucous membrane contact all carry different risks. Condoms and lubricant can significantly reduce risk during vaginal and anal sex; dental dams or cut-open condoms can offer protection during oral sex on the vulva or anus. Sex toys should be cleaned, disinfected, or used with condoms, especially when they are shared between people or moved between body openings.

Safer sex also means communication: everyone involved should be able to talk openly about protection, testing, contraception, boundaries, and known infections without pressure or shame. Symptoms such as unusual discharge, burning, pain, sores, blisters, or a rash should be medically assessed, and higher-risk contact should be avoided until clarified. Good safer sex practice protects not only one’s own body, but also partners and other people involved.
