Ally

An ally is a person who is not themselves part of the affected queer, trans, asexual or generally marginalised group, but actively supports them. An ally may speak out against discrimination, listen, learn and respect the needs and boundaries of the community. Support is not only shown in words, but also in behaviour.

An ally tries to act consciously and reflectively. This includes not patronising people, listening to them, respecting their terms and self-identifications, and not using privilege against them. Being an ally is not a fixed identity, but rather an attitude and a way of acting. In the best case, an ally helps queer people feel safer, more visible and more respected.
