Celibacy
Celibacy refers to the voluntary or religiously prescribed life of remaining unmarried and often sexually abstinent. It plays an important role in some religions and religious orders, for example among priests or monks. The vow may concern abstaining from marriage, from sexual activity, or from both, depending on the tradition and interpretation.
In a sexual context, celibacy is understood more as conscious abstinence than as an erotic practice. It may be chosen for spiritual, personal, or disciplinary reasons. It is important to distinguish voluntary celibacy from coerced abstinence; only the former is a self-determined choice.
