Contraception
Contraception refers to measures intended primarily to prevent unwanted pregnancy. Depending on the method, the risk of sexually transmitted infections may also be reduced, but not all contraceptive methods offer the same level of protection. Common methods include hormonal contraception, barrier methods such as condoms, chemical methods, natural methods, and surgical contraception such as sterilization.
Which method is suitable depends on age, health, lifestyle, and the desired level of reliability. Correct use is especially important, because many methods are only reliable when used properly and consistently. If there is any uncertainty, pre-existing medical conditions, or questions about tolerability, medical advice should be sought; contraception does not reliably protect against all sexually transmitted infections, so condoms often remain advisable with changing partners.
