Hormonal implant
A hormonal implant is a form of hormonal contraception inserted under the skin of the upper arm. It usually contains the progestin etonogestrel and releases the active ingredient continuously over a longer period. This mainly suppresses ovulation and also thickens cervical mucus, making it harder for sperm to pass through.
The hormonal implant is a very reliable contraceptive method, but it must be inserted and later removed by medical professionals. As with other hormonal contraceptives, side effects can occur, such as irregular bleeding, headaches, mood changes, or skin changes. The method does not protect against sexually transmitted infections.
