DMAB

DMAB stands for designated male at birth, AMAB for assigned male at birth, and MAAB for male assigned at birth. All three variants indicate that a person was assigned male at birth. Intersex, transgender, and non-binary people may use these terms to describe the sex or gender category assigned at birth without making any statement about their current gender identity.

These abbreviations are used especially in queer, medical, and activist contexts. Depending on the situation, they can be helpful for describing experiences of gender assignment more precisely; however, they should not be used to reduce a person to bodily characteristics or to an assumed “original” sex. A person’s current self-identification remains decisive. 13/25
