O
In BDSM contexts, “O” stands for a submissive person who willingly takes on a devoted role. The letter is best known from Pauline Réage’s novel “Story of O,” in which the main character is addressed only as “O.” In modern usage, “O” can symbolize surrender, ownership, or complete submission.
When people address one another only as “O” or by the initial of their first name in a scene or relationship, this is usually a deliberate role-play element and should always be consensual. Clear agreements, boundaries, and respectful communication are important so that the role is not confused with real degradation. Without consent, such forms of address are inappropriate.
