Performativity

Performativity is a term from linguistics and describes the relationship between speech and action. An utterance is performative when spoken words do not merely describe something, but at the same time perform an action or create a social reality. A classic example is a marriage formula such as “I hereby pronounce you married,” provided it is spoken within the appropriate legal and social context.

The concept is also used in gender studies, especially in feminist and queer theory. There, performativity refers to the repeated linguistic, bodily, and social acts through which gender is assigned, made recognizable, and socially confirmed. One example is the statement “It’s a girl” during an ultrasound examination: it does not only describe an observation, but places a child within a social gender system and invokes expectations, roles, and norms.

Performativity does not mean that gender is simply freely chosen or merely “acted out.” Rather, it means that gender as a social reality is continuously produced through repeated actions, attributions, and recognition. Because these repetitions are never completely identical, ideas about gender, bodies, identity, and roles can also change over time.
