The term “third gender” is used colloquially and historically to describe gender identities that do not fit neatly into the categories male or female. Some people use it as an umbrella term for non-binary, intersex, or otherwise non-binary-related identities. However, the term is imprecise and many affected people do not consider it a fitting description.

Legally and conceptually, “third gender” is problematic because it can suggest a clearly defined third category alongside “male” and “female.” In reality, gender is more diverse and not limited to three fixed groups. More precise self-descriptions such as non-binary, intersex, or other individual terms are usually preferable. 22/25
