SM Studio
An SM studio is a specially equipped location where BDSM or SM practices can take place. The term is often used for commercially operated spaces, for example those run by professional dominatrices, dommes, or studios offering bookable sessions, but it can also refer to non-commercial private playrooms. Typical features include a discreet setting, sturdy furniture, and equipment such as a St. Andrew’s cross, spanking bench, examination couch, cage, pillory, bondage points, or other BDSM accessories.
There are also so-called SM apartments or BDSM apartments. These are usually furnished in a more residential style and, depending on the provider, may be rented for private sessions, longer meetings, or overnight stays. The boundaries between studio, dungeon, playroom, and themed apartment are fluid; what matters is that the space is suitable for the planned practices, clean, safe, and used in a legally appropriate way.
Clear agreements, consent, hygiene, and safety precautions are essential. This includes stable attachment points, suitable emergency tools, good ventilation, clean surfaces, fresh towels or protective covers, and the ability to stop a scene at any time. In commercial settings, professionalism, discretion, transparent rules, clearly defined limits of the offered practices, and the personal safety of everyone involved should be central.
