Anal intercourse refers to sexual intercourse in which a penis or another suitable sex toy is inserted into the anus. It occurs in many sexual contexts, not only in BDSM, and is experienced by some as especially pleasurable. Consent, sufficient preparation, and a careful approach are essential.

Because of the increased risk of injury and sexually transmitted infections, special caution is needed. A condom, plenty of lubricant, and slow, gradual penetration are important; the intestinal lining is sensitive and the anus only stretches to a limited extent. If pain, bleeding, or discomfort occurs, stop immediately. Good hygiene matters, and switching from anal to vaginal contact without cleaning should be avoided to prevent infections.
