DFAB
The abbreviation DFAB stands for designated female at birth, AFAB for assigned female at birth, and FAAB for female assigned at birth. All three variants refer to a person being assigned female at birth. Intersex, transgender, and non-binary people may use these terms to describe the sex or gender category assigned at birth without implying anything about their current gender identity.
These terms are used especially in queer, medical, and activist contexts. Depending on the context, they can be useful for describing experiences of gender assignment more precisely; however, they should not be used to reduce a person to bodily characteristics or to an assumed “original” sex. A person’s current self-identification remains decisive. 08/25
