Enby Dyke

Enby dyke is a self-description for people who are non-binary and also identify as lesbian, dyke, or as belonging to lesbian or sapphic contexts. “Enby” is a phonetic form of “NB,” meaning non-binary. “Dyke” has historically been used in English as a derogatory term for lesbian or queer women, but some people have reclaimed it as an empowering self-description.

The term can express that non-binary gender identity and lesbian belonging are not mutually exclusive. Not all non-binary people who experience lesbian or sapphic attraction use this label, and not all lesbian communities understand the terms in the same way. Because “dyke” can still be hurtful, it should only be used for people who explicitly use it for themselves or have agreed to it.
