Masochism
Masochism refers to experiencing pleasure, arousal, or gratification through enduring pain, submission, humiliation, or other controlled boundary experiences. In BDSM contexts, masochism is a common inclination or preference and is practiced only consensually and within clearly agreed limits. The term is derived from Leopold von Sacher-Masoch.
It is important to distinguish consensual masochistic play from non-consensual violence. Masochism should not be understood as “passive sadism.” For more intense practices, safewords, aftercare, a realistic assessment of physical and emotional limits, and careful attention to risk are essential.
