Physical Sex

A person’s physical sex is often described through visible or medically measurable traits such as genitals, hormones, or chromosomes and is socially assigned to gender categories. However, this assignment is not purely a biological fact; it is also shaped by social and cultural norms. What is considered “male” or “female” depends greatly on these norms and is not always clear-cut.

Importantly, physical traits do not reliably indicate a person’s gender identity. Intersex people, for example, do not fit neatly into a strict binary system, and trans people may also have physical traits that do not match their identity. A factual and respectful description therefore avoids blanket assumptions and recognizes the diversity of human bodies and identities.
