Supplementary ID card
A supplementary ID card is an additional document that was mainly used by trans and non-binary people to show a chosen name and appropriate form of address or gender designation when official documents did not yet reflect them. It is not an official identity document, but it can serve as a practical aid in everyday situations, for example during checks, in customer service settings, or where the legal entry has not yet been changed.
Important: a supplementary ID card does not replace an official ID card or a legal change of civil status. Its acceptance is not binding everywhere and depends on the institution or situation. In Germany, its practical relevance has also decreased in many cases since the Self-Determination Act came into force in 2024.
