Testosterone

Testosterone is a natural sex hormone found in all genders, although it is typically present at higher levels in men than in women on average. It plays an important role in bone metabolism, muscle growth, libido, mood, and the development of secondary sex characteristics. It is often called the “male hormone” in everyday language, but biologically it is not limited to men.

As part of hormone therapy, testosterone may be prescribed by a doctor, for example for trans men and some non-binary people. Possible changes include increased muscle mass, more facial and body hair, a deeper voice, and changes in the genital area, including enlargement of the clitoris. Such treatment should always be medically supervised, as side effects and health risks can occur.
