Breadcrumbing
Breadcrumbing describes behavior in which a person signals interest through small gestures, messages, or compliments without ever allowing a clear or committed progression. The signals go just far enough to create hope, but repeatedly withdraw as soon as more commitment is expected.
A typical pattern is one of closeness and distance: there are occasional attempts at contact, but no clear intention, no consistency, and often no honest clarification. Those affected often experience this as confusing and emotionally draining, because expectations of a relationship or genuine care are repeatedly disappointed.
In a BDSM context, breadcrumbing can also be harmful if used as a tool for control, uncertainty, or emotional attachment. It should not be confused with conscious, consensual “tease and denial,” where rules, boundaries, and goals are clearly discussed. Without transparency, breadcrumbing is a manipulative form of communication.
