Greygender

Ad

Greygender is a non-binary gender identity. People may describe themselves as greygender if they are wholly or partly outside the binary categories of woman and man, and if their gender feels weak, undefined, hard to name, difficult to grasp or of little personal significance.

The term often describes a strong ambivalence toward one’s own gender identity or gender presentation. This may mean that a person does perceive a gender, but cannot clearly categorize it or does not attach much importance to it. Greygender is not the same as confusion or indecision; it is a possible self-description for a particular way of experiencing gender.

Gender identity and gender presentation are not the same: a greygender person may dress, behave or express themselves in many different ways. In sexuality, dating and BDSM, greygender says nothing about a person’s body, pronouns, sexual orientation, roles, preferences or boundaries. What matters are the person’s self-description, respectful language and clear, consensual communication about desires and limits.
