Mirror Pronouns
Mirror pronouns are a way of using pronouns in which the pronouns used for a person are the same as the pronouns the other person uses for themselves. The pronouns are “mirrored”: for example, if a conversation partner uses “she/her” for herself, she may also use those pronouns for the person with mirror pronouns.
The term is still not widely used and may be understood differently depending on the community or individual. Mirror pronouns do not necessarily mean “any pronouns”; they usually refer to the pronouns of the person currently speaking or interacting. In group situations, written communication, or conversations involving several people, this can become unclear.
For that reason, it is best to ask respectfully when unsure which form is preferred in a specific situation. As with all pronouns, a person’s self-description should be taken seriously and treated respectfully, without ridicule or unnecessary debate.
