Stone Butch

The term Stone Butch can be used in two ways. First, it may refer to lesbian or queer people who present in a strongly masculine way and who do not want to be touched in the genital area during sex. This can be understood independently of gender expression or outward appearance. In all cases, self-identification and clear communication of boundaries are essential.

Second, the term is also sometimes used in the community for a particularly masculine-appearing butch identity, referring to a person’s style, behavior, or overall presentation. The term became widely known through Leslie Feinberg’s book Stone Butch Blues. Some Stone Butches identify as part of the asexual spectrum, while others do not; this should not be generalized.
