Third Option

“Third Option” refers in this context to a political and activist demand for an additional legal gender marker alongside “male” and “female.” The organization of the same name advocates for recognition of gender diversity and for better legal conditions for intersex and non-binary people. In public debate, the legal marker “diverse,” available in Germany since 01/01/2019, is sometimes criticized as insufficient.

Importantly, this is not about claiming that there is simply a “third gender.” Rather, the aim is to create legal room for people whose gender is not adequately covered by existing categories. The term therefore stands for a social and legal debate about recognition and self-determination. 21/25
