Top

In BDSM and related sexual contexts, a top is the person who takes the active or leading role. A top typically takes initiative, gives direction, or carries out specific practices. The role is not tied to any particular gender; tops can be female, male, or non-binary.

Top does not automatically mean “dominant” in the strict sense. A top can be technically or physically leading without taking on the power or control role of a dom. Switches can also be tops when they take the active role in a specific situation. What matters is the particular dynamic, clear agreements, and consent.
