Cross-
Cross- is a prefix from English and literally means “cross” or “crossing.” In sexual, queer, and gender-related contexts, it usually describes the crossing, exceeding, or deliberate combining of a social norm, expectation, or category.
The prefix commonly appears in terms such as crossdressing, cross-gender, crossplay, or crossdreaming. Depending on the term, it may refer to clothing, roles, fantasies, presentation, desire, or identity. Cross- does not automatically mean that a person is trans, has a particular sexual orientation, or permanently lives a specific gender identity.
The exact meaning depends strongly on the compound term and the context. Some cross- terms are neutral or positive self-descriptions, while others may be outdated, controversial, or used only in specific scenes. It is therefore important to consider whether a term is being used as a self-description and whether it is meant respectfully.
