In general usage, the St. Andrew’s Cross is best known as a traffic and warning sign, for example at railway crossings. In BDSM, however, it refers to a bondage and restraint cross used mainly in studios or specially equipped rooms. The restrained person is fastened to it with arms and legs spread, leaving them with very little freedom of movement. The focus is on control, vulnerability, fixation and often the theatrical presentation of the scene.

The St. Andrew’s Cross is a classic piece of BDSM furniture and is also known by the same name in English. It may stand freely or be fixed to a wall or floor, and is usually made of wood or metal. Depending on the design, it may be padded, covered in leather or decorated. It is important that restraint and body position remain safe and that breathing, circulation and physical strain are taken into account. As with all forms of restraint, the restrained person should never be left unattended.
