In BDSM, corporal punishment refers to a consensual punishment or discipline scene, often using impact tools such as a cane, riding crop, whip, paddle, strap, or the hand. It may take place as erotic impact play, as part of a dominance-and-submission dynamic, or within a role play. The intensity can range from symbolic, playful strokes to clearly painful sensations and depends greatly on experience, preference, body area, and the instrument used.

It is important to distinguish this clearly from real violence: corporal punishment in BDSM is acceptable only when it is voluntary, negotiated beforehand, and stoppable at any time. Roles such as “punishment,” “training,” or “discipline” may be erotically appealing, but they must not conceal actual coercion, intimidation, or abuse. The reason for the scene, type of impact, permitted body areas, intensity, duration, taboos, safewords, and aftercare should be discussed clearly in advance.

Strikes should primarily target well-padded areas such as the buttocks or thighs. The spine, kidney area, head, neck, joints, abdomen, and genitals are especially vulnerable and should be avoided or included only with significant expertise. Bastinado, meaning strikes to the bare soles of the feet, is also a form of corporal punishment, but it requires particular caution because of possible nerve, tendon, ligament, and walking-related problems. Redness, severe bruising, numbness, dizziness, persistent pain, or emotional overwhelm are clear signs to pause or stop.
